~Tips for Keeping Reptiles Healthy During Winter Months
-The best way to keep reptiles warm during the winter months is to keep lights on constantly. (Hint: if temperatures are lower than requirements, use a higher wattage bulb to increase heat!!)
As your house gets colder, you will want to add more heat sources to your tanks to keep your pet warm. Add in a basking rock as well, as this will help with maintaining a heat source inside as well for digestion. (In snakes, cold = indigestion of food, which can kill them. Food rots from inside of your snakes belly).
Another great tip to keeping the heat in-- aluminum foil over the top of the tank to help reflect the light/heat to stay into the tank.
Humidity! Reptiles need humidity to help with their shedding. If they do not have the correct amount of humidity, this can cause abnormal shedding (dysecdysis). Dysecdysis can be an indicator of many health issues. Keep reptiles safe from dysecdysis by keeping them warm and humid in the winter/cold months.
